Medical Investigation Laboratory

LIM 55: This laboratory was established in 1994 as a urodynamics and experimental surgery laboratory. In 2004, it was transformed into a medical investigation laboratory with a special focus on molecular techniques. It is located on the 2nd floor of the Faculty of Medicine building at USP. It has been modernized, thanks to a donation of R$ 500,000 obtained from Banco Alfa. This laboratory develops projects in four research lines: 1. Molecular biology in determining prognostic factors in urogenital diseases, primarily cancer; 2. Integration program of new tissues and biological materials in the reconstruction of the urinary tract; 3. Experimental models of urogenital tumors for testing new drugs and therapeutic agents; 4. Voiding dysfunction and sphincter insufficiency. It consists of 3 rooms with benches for experiments, a –80°C freezer with shelves for storing frozen specimens, common freezers, refrigerators, 2 refrigerated centrifuges, a minispin centrifuge, a 5415D centrifuge, electrophoresis tanks, electrophoresis power supplies, gel analysis imaging equipment, sets of micropipettes, electronic pipettes, materials and equipment for manipulation, and reagents for conducting molecular tests. Equipment for cell culture includes an inverted microscope, two CO2 incubators for cell cultures, an automatic cell counter, two biological safety cabinets in the pre-PCR and cell culture areas, a tissue grinder for nucleic acid extraction, real-time PCR, 2 Veriti thermocyclers, water treatment equipment (Milli-Q), an optical microscope with an imaging capture system and analysis software (Nikon), a thermoblock for microtubes, and an ELISA plate reader and washer. It also has a luminometer and Uvitec transilluminator for capturing in vitro and in vivo images. The laboratory is staffed by 1 technician, 2 biologists, 1 biomedical professional, and 1 scientific researcher. Additionally, there are 13 senior doctors dedicated to the laboratory, 5 undergraduate research students, 3 master’s students, 30 doctoral candidates, and 1 postdoctoral researcher.

Computer Resources

The IT Center was established in 1995 and is located on the 7th floor of the Urology Clinic Division of the Central Institute of the Hospital das Clínicas. We have a hardware and software environment with various IT resources available to faculty and students. Due to the size of our center and to maintain a more robust and secure environment, we have 3 Network Servers configured according to the needs of the System (running 24 hours a day), with controlled air conditioning.

Library

Located on the 7th floor of the Urology Clinic Division of the Central Institute of the Hospital das Clínicas, it is a spacious room providing research assistance and a suitable place for study and writing, equipped with 7 state-of-the-art computers, Wireless network access, and access to all medical-related databases (Medline, Pubmed, Lilacs, OVID Database, CAPES Journals Portal, Dedalus - USP bibliographic database, Bireme, and others). Students can access the collection of the Central Library of the Faculty of Medicine, where they will find a larger number of books and journals. The Division of Clinic Program has access to full texts of major national and international journals, both general and specific to urology. There is a large number of textbooks, manuals, and atlases, among other publications related to the area of Urology.

CEPEC - Vicky Safra Center for Teaching and Research in Surgery

Since its inauguration in August 2007, CEPEC - Vicky Safra Center for Teaching and Research in Surgery - has been the site for implementing a teaching and training program for advanced surgical techniques.
